October 21 - 2000 Unkind DJ....
AJ from Mariah Carey : The 10
S's Page sent me this: just a couple of hours ago, I was driving back from a friend's house and got stuck in a bit of a traffic jam. I switched from CD to radio, and they were playing the Mariah & Westlife version of Against All Odds! I became ecstatic!!! I was lucky I didn't bump into that nice jeep in front of me. (It could have easily happened, I was just a mere couple of inches away from a possible lawsuit.) It's just that your entire self gets taken over by such a immensely great feeling each time you hear that song on the radio over here. It's like being abducted and taken to a really beautiful place that's outta this planet. And you really should cherish the whole 3 minutes & 15 seconds of it, because you won't hear it very often again after that. It really bothers me that they don't play the song frequently over here in Malaysia. Sure, Mariah's fan base in Malaysia may have gotten substantially smaller ever since the release of Rainbow last year, but for heaven's sake, at least play it because Westlife's in it! Play it for the Westlife fans!! Westlife seems to have a HUUUUUGE following in this country. But no, even Westlife's not doing the trick! The song is just as rare as dinosaurs! It's so weird. Anyway, when the song was over, the DJ (a female one) plugged the title and the artist, and then she spoke about Mariah. Now I hope no one quotes me on this. I know this isn't exactly what she said. But it was something to this effect. She said something like... "Now, I'm not sure about Westlife, but Mariah doesn't seem to sound very impressive on that song. She didn't scale the octaves or do any high notes except towards the end. Perhaps she wasn't feeling well when she recorded the song. Perhaps it was recorded on a tired day." She didn't sound like she was joking. She sounded very serious. (Typical of the DJs on that station. Most of them are pretty serious and boring and not very lively... They don't have many hip and cool DJs.) Does Mariah deserve that?! I mean, come on! No high notes, except towards the end of the song?! Hello! I'd love to listen to HER version!!! I wonder if she's heard Can't Take That Away... You can't sing an entire song in a high octave. A song has to start in a low octave and it will eventually come to a climax, which is usually placed at the end of the song. And besides, who says ALL songs have to have a climax? OK...
perhaps she expects that from a singer like Mariah. But Against All
Odds DOES have a high climax! I'm a bit (just a bit) of a singer myself,
and I KNOW FOR A FACT that that's a VERY high climax! Belting out
that part isn't a walk in the park, be sure of that! OK, so maybe
it's normal for some DJs to critisize her like that. But it does make
you kinda furious. And it's alright for me to express my opinion,
isn't it? Well, I've gotta go. Take care!! And all the best!!! :-)

So it seems like most fans prefer the Mariah only version of AAO!
Or maybe thats the only version they heard? I liked it by far the
most at first, but now I like them both the same cuz the new one lets
me actually hear Mariah on radio for once! Here are the results: |

Tom mails this:
I wasn't mad at the show. I listen to him every morning on my radio at work and he has a
really bad reputation but he's a pretty nice guy who has an x-rated sense of
humor and he's funny. I did laugh at quite a few parts especially when he
pretended he was Mariah in her house with Tommy and trying to leave a message
for the fans and pretending he was doing morse code and said Tommy was like "I
paid $25 million for a house we're not having a room for fanbooks. Get in
here and pay attention to me."
I thought Mariah might call in since I'm sure people called her to let her
know, maybe she will tomorrow, but she's usually sleeping at that time.

October 17 - 2000 Various news
First sorry for the slow updates. My new job is taking much of my time and energy, but
I will start update faster next week again. Here are some various news:
Candice sent me something that I don't really understand but hopefully
paintchop pro users will:
Xmas song big hit for Mariah? Well, I certainly have expectationf for this song, sadly
Mariah is not singing it! This is from a Faith Hill interview:
VH1: Tell us about what we have been watching today for the past couple of
hours.
FAITH HILL: Well, I'm shooting the video for a song that is going to be in
'How the Grinch Stole Christmas'. So, welcome to Whoville. It's basically
behind me, we're sitting outside of Whoville right now. It's a magical
video. I've wanted to work with the director, PAUL HUNTER, for so long and
he's really outdone himself on this one.
VH1: Welcome to Whoville. I like that.
Faith: It's really magical. It's like being there in Whoville for real. And
they've recreated the mountain that the Grinch lives on and they are all
going to be part of the video, so it's like the story we all grew up
knowing and reading and we're here. I'm here now, I'm part of it. It's
really exciting.
VH1: What is your first memory of How the Grinch Who Stole Christmas?
Faith: Well, I just remember reading as a child -- lots of Dr. Seuss books.
I think the first one I had was Green Eggs and Ham and then The Grinch who
Stole Christmas. That's just always been around in my family, it still is.
I still read it to my children.
VH1: When I first saw what you were singing, I thought it was a couple of
classic songs remix, but this was actually co-written by a fellow VH1 diva.
Faith: Yes, that's right. MARIAH CAREY wrote this song along with JAMES
HORNER and WILL JENNINGS. It is a beautiful song. I was asked to sing this
song and I've never recorded a Christmas song, so the opportunity to work
with a project like this -- with a story I grew up with and a song that is
so beautiful. It didn't leave my memory the first time I heard it.
VH1: I think you might have a little hit on your hands.
Faith: The video, the song, and the movie... it's all a wonderful project
and so are the people who are involved with it. They're all great people
and it's an honor to work with all of them.
VH1: Now, there is an album coming out. This is the first single to be
released. You are sharing billing with 'NSYNC, SMASH MOUTH, and the BARE
NAKED LADIES just to name a few. Does that open more doors now to a broader
audience?
Faith: Oh, it's always cool to pair up with different musicians, especially
good ones. Especially ones that you like. I was very aware of who was part
of this project and before I get into any project, I have to believe in it
VH1: I would never have thought of 'NSync. There are a bunch of little
girls that are going to be into it, and you as well. As far as everything
that has been going on with you, is this Christmas going to be any
different for you than Christmases in the past?
Faith: Well, our tour. My husband and I are out on a tour together that was
extended through December so we'll be on the road right up before
Christmas. I have to be very organized when planning Christmas this year.
But we will be home, that's the good thing. And we'll have this movie to
watch. I'm so excited.
VH1: Give us a little sneak peek of what the viewer can expect ... What can
they expect from this video?
Faith: It's magical. It's really magical. It's like a little piece of this
movie is part of the video and it's very magical. It puts you in the
spirit. I've heard this song over and over and over again, all of us have
here today and it's still very beautiful.
I found this little tiny bit in canadian Jam, I'm not sure what they mean
though!
This is news from Ashes, and mentions Mariah. Those Westlife guys are
pretty rude considering Christina Aguilera is soooooooo great!
We can now say goodbye to the sweet-natured, butter wouldn't
melt image of Westlife. Kian and Shane have laid into Christina
Aguilera big time.
The lads say that after working with Mariah they wouldn't want to
work with anyone below her level of mega-stardom, and that
Christina was near the bottom of their list:
"There's no way in the world that we're going to do that, because
first of all we don't like her, and second of all we don't rate her."
Shane told Radio 1 their dislike for her came about after a brief
meeting in a bar: "She made Mark remove himself from his chair,
'coz she was Christina and he was nothing. When you've got
ignorance at that level, we don't tolerate it!"
In the process of dissing Christina, Kian got a bit tongue-tied:
"When you do a duet with someone of Mariah's statature..."
"I actually don't think that that is a word, Kian. I think it's stature,"
said Shane.
"I was trying to be intelligent there. Sometimes it doesn’t work,"
was Kian's reply.
Hmm, boybands! Hey, Sisqo wants you to vote for Mariah here:

October 16 - 2000 Song contest winner speaks out.
Mariah was introduced to me in 1997 (yeah I know! Late Starter).
Although I had only one of her albums (Musicbox) before that, I have not really
paid much attention to her works.
It was not until a close singing friend of mine whom I stayed with for almost a
year in 1997 that I got to really appreciate the prowess and talent of Mariah.
Those runny notes and vocal range took my breath away.
Since then I have collected all her albums and most of her singles from
Butterfly onwards.
A lot of nasty things have been said about Mariah especially since she adopted
a "new image".
In my opinion, you are who you are and she is just being who she is.
All that matters is within the heart.
And that voice is certainly a plus point :)
As for singing, I love it :O
I was invited to join the school choir when I was 15.
The interest was cultivated from there.
And yes, I have been singing quite a lot since my school days.
As Mariah's songs are hard to sing, I have been using them for vocal training
(esp. the runny notes and improvisation - still trying to perfect them).
I have no plans in the near future to switch to music even though that is my
favourite pasttime :)
If I do, I would like to audition for a musical production as I feel I am more
suitable for that sort of singing.

And she adds this:
Jimmy Jam, for instance, has produced some of the most beautiful women in music- Janet Jackson, Vanessa L. Williams, and Mariah Carey to name a few. "They're gorgeous and that's fine with me, because it's his work," Harris says. "And they can sing- I'm fans of each of them myself."
Living Petal writes:
Then, I went on another record bar inside the department store and asked again for the song. Instead of recommending Rainbow, she gave me Max 7. So I told them that the Rainbow album was repackaged with the bonus CD (I think they don't know that) and they just replied that it's not available in there.
I think if they will sell the repackaged Rainbow in this way, no one will notice that there is a bonus CD inside, unless the customer will ask for some assistance on the album, the whole repackaging is useless and the sales won't increase. I think they should put a poster outside and display the Rainbow CD with that little ad-strip so everyone who sees it will know. If this continues, the Max 7 album will have the increase of sales instead of Mariah's "Rainbow"
Sounds like a good advice, Sony, pay attention!
Doriand & Salma from this site called Tilly-Key.com said you need to check out

Where does Mariah come in? She's totally what brought out a change in my life. I first heard her when I was twelve years old, cruising with my parents in their old van. The song was "Vision of Love" and I practically started crying because I knew she was special. Her hits began to pile up after that, and I found myself suddenly buying all her albums and singles. |

Mariah is #1 for the second week in a row on the national radio request chart Tracks in my country Sweden. And it's also up to the #3 most sold single. AAO is doing great in many countries all over Europe and stands at #4 on the European chart last week. I think it had been #1 if it actually had been released in all countries in Europe, and if MTV didn't refuse to play it. |

October 14 - 2000 Mariah chillin in Barbados!
Yes, Gillian who is Mariahs biggest fan in Barbados tells me Mariah has
spent a 2 days minivacation there with Luis! Here is from the newspaper
Barbados Daily Nation:
Singing sensation Mariah Carey left Barbados last
night after two days of relaxation.
Sporting a white swimsuit with a matching silk sarong,
the smiling 28-year-old left in her private jet for St.
Maarten where she will film part of a music video.
Carey’s Barbados vacation started Thursday with a
West Coast cruise on the catamaran Vahine, which is
managed and skippered by Nick Parker. She later had
dinner at The Cliff, Paynes Bay, St. James, then slept
for most of yesterday before having a massage and a
late afternoon swim.
Yesterday, the songstress also visited Eddy Grant’s
Blue Wave studios where she intends to record in the
near future.
Carey stayed at Glitter Bay Hotel, St. James, and
her arrival and departure arrangements were done by Platinum Services.
Describing Barbados as a “beautiful place”, she said
she “had a good time and enjoyed the beaches”.
Before coming to Barbados, she was in New York where
she completed a movie, All That Glitters.
